What Does My Lady's Lost Her Diamond Ring Mean?
Everyone sits with their hands pressed palm to palm. One player, the "servant", holds a ring between her palms and slips her hands into each player's hands, letting the ring drop secretly into one pair. Then she says the call and "pitches upon", meaning picks, someone to guess who has it.
History and Origin
James Orchard Halliwell described the game in Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales (1849). Pass-the-object guessing games like this are still played at parties today, sometimes with a button instead of a ring.
Learning Activities
- Play it: use a button or coin as the ring and play in a circle.
- Poker faces: practice keeping a straight face so nobody can tell you have the ring.
- Party game: play it at a birthday party with a small prize for good guessers.
