Coffee and Tea Lyrics

Ages 4-9Mother Goose

Two sisters have a falling-out, and the reason is a very small one: one likes coffee and the other likes tea. A four-line rhyme about how little it takes to start an argument.

Coffee and Tea

Molly, my sister and I fell out,
And what do you think it was all about?
She loved coffee and I loved tea,
And that was the reason we couldn't agree.

What Does Coffee and Tea Mean?

To fall out is to argue. The speaker and her sister Molly could not agree, and the whole quarrel was about taste: Molly loved coffee, the speaker loved tea. The joke is how big a fuss can grow from such a small difference.

History and Origin

The rhyme is printed in The Real Mother Goose (1916). Tea and coffee were everyday drinks in English and American homes by the 1800s, and which one a person preferred was a common subject of friendly teasing.
